Trust Without Wavering

Pastor Bob Claffey

David writes in the Psalms concerning his relationship with the Lord; I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart. Psalm 26:1-2 NLT

David said that he trusted in the Lord without wavering. What does it mean to trust in the Lord?  The word trust means to have a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.

David was saying:

  • God, I believe that you are reliable
  • God, I believe in what you say
  • God, I believe in your ability
  • God, I believe in your strength that you can do what you have said

David said he trusted without wavering. To waver is much like the waves of the sea.  They go up and down, in and out. We have to have a consistent walk with God; we can’t be up one day saying “Oh Lord, I love you”, and the next day be down so low that we’re wondering if He is real!

Trust is built on knowledge and understanding. Trust is a firm belief. When something is firm it’s not easily moved, our belief in God should be rock steady built on a firm foundation of faith in His Word. When we look at the problems in our lives we can become discouraged and can begin to wonder how we are going to make it through the hard times.  We might begin to question or doubt what God has said.

God wants us to put our trust in Him. He wants you to have a firm belief in what He says, in His ability and strength.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Your trust should not easily move, it should be a constant in your life. We should not change day to day according to the circumstances in our life. We need to be firmly planted, having a constant trust in the Lord.

Hebrews 12:2 – looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. NKJV

We need to keep our eyes on Jesus.  He will keep you from wavering back and forth when life gets crazy. The Bible says to look unto Jesus, which means keep your attention on Him.  Every time you are tempted to think about the problems or troubles in your life, remind yourself that God is with you and that He is able to help you through any situation that you may be facing.  Don’t look at the problem – look at Jesus!

I encourage you today to trust in the Lord without wavering today!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you are able to keep my trust from wavering.  Help me to keep my eyes on Jesus, especially when I am going through hard times. Help me be reminded that His words are reliable, help me to believe in His abilities, and have courage because of His strength. I refuse to waver, to go back and forth in my life. I firmly settle my trust in the Lord as an anchor for my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
